Hi. So I have a Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop with 256 MB of Ram (32-bit Windows XP Home Edition SP2) 2.2mghz and i want to upgrade the ram to 512 MB... My owner's manual says that the maximum RAM my pc can hold is 512 MB (minimum is 256). However, the laptop only has once socket (in which the 256 MB ram stick is already installed). What should I do to upgrade? I cannot just buy another 256 MB stick, because there would be no place to put it... so would it be alright to just buy a 512 MB ram stick and replace the 256 one with the 512 one?
I just wanted to make sure that it would be ok to stick the 512 stick in the same place the pre-installed 256 stick is...
Thanks!

Upgrading my RAM?
Exactly. Replace the 256 with a 512 and you'll be set.
Reply:take your computer to the dealer and ask whether the new ram is compatible. also i recommend getting 750 MB or 1G, because window easily eats up 512 MB. you might be able to plug in your new ram in the store to see if it works.
Reply:Yes, buy a 512 mb stick and replace it with the 256mb stick. Make sure the new RAM is compatible with your laptop prior to purchasing it.
Reply:It should be alright replacing the 256mb stick with a 512mb one, as long as they have the same number of pins and are the same type (DDR SDRAM, DDR2, etc).
Reply:yes it would be alright to put the 512MB stick where the 256MB is...
Just make sure that the one u replace with has the same frequency as that of the older one
EXAMPLE:
==========
Suppose the the 256MB that u have works at 800mHz
then the 512MB one should also rated as 800mHz
/****
CAUTION!: Always upgrade a laptop hardware from a authorised DELL reseller or upgrade online that way u will get assured of quality...
